Entertainment news reporters, journalists, celebrities, known personalities, and netizens have spoken about “Culion” and we are overwhelmed with their positive feedback!
“Culion” opened last Dec. 25 along with other 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival entries. Many highlighted the short but essential scene of John Lloyd Cruz as well as the ending of the movie. (Watch the film on why they are talking about the ending.)
Apart from the scenes, we felt more glad knowing that they learned about the history of Culion island and got aware of Hansen’s Disease.
Others commended veteran scriptwriter Ricky Lee for another well-written piece that made the viewers cry. Several gave a thumbs up to the Neil Daza’s cinematography. Director Alvin Yapan lauded for creating a masterpiece that formed a harmonious performance by an ensemble.
Senator Panfilo Lacson:
GMA News Anchor Arnold Clavio:
Ang hirap maging isolated, iyong talikuran ka ng mundo, at the same time, malaman natin ‘yung yaman ng kultura ng mga taga-Culion. So it was a very nice movie na sana mapanood ng marami.
Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis-Briones:
I love the love scene best of all kasi nakahahawa ang pag-ibig.
MECO Chairman Lito Banayo:
This is one movie that will be etched in my memory for the rest of my human existence.
Fred Hawson, Fred Said:
The timeless Ricky Lee impresses yet again with another multi-layered masterpiece of a script, which director Alvin Yapan brought to life with inherent sensitivity and astute artistic choices, in collaboration with his cinematographer par excellence Neil Daza.
With story arcs grounded on the struggle of its locals, instead of sensationalizing the actual disease plaguing them, the film effectively humanizes and draws sympathy for those casted out by society. Aside from this, the undeniable gripping writing by the screenplay veteran is also a cause of allure for audiences who will find themselves struck by hard-hitting, intelligent, at times humorous and eye-opening dialogue, one scene after the other.
Alwin Ignacio, Abante Tonite:
Well if there’s one movie na dapat ninyo talagang panoorin ngayong film fest, it’s Culion because it’s well-written, wonderfully-acted at talagang it will touch your heart with so many scenes that will make you cry, will make you think, will make you realize that there are so many people whose history we have forgotten. And we should remember what Culion stands for, what these people went through, what are their struggles, and how they were able to show to everyone that what we really needright now is love, compassion and a gentle heart.
Edmund Silvestre, SunStar:
It’s a brilliant and mesmerizing film. This will be remembered as one of the most socially-relevant film of all time along the likes of “Himala”, “Karnal”, “Itim”, “Moral”, iyong mga ginawa ni Ricky Lee. Maaalala ito. Pag-uusapan ito.
Blogger Rain de Ocampo:
Culion is more than a history film. Sa tingin ko it’s a story of human triumph, story of hope. This film embodies the longings ng mga tao noong panahon na iyon. Ang galing ng acting ng mga cast. Kudos doon sa performance nila Iza Calzado and Joem Bascon. And then iyong special participation ni John Lloyd, iyong scene nila ni Meryll is very strong.
Pero itong movie na ito, it will make you realize na they are actually people like us no matter what their conditions are, no matter what their ailments are, they’re humans. And they feel the same way that we do.
Josephine Bonsol, jobonsol.net:
Sa first impression akala mo simple. At dapat mong pagdaanan iyong sakit.
Ricky Calderon, Manila Times:
Maganda ang mensahe at dapat maraming Pilipino ang makapanood. Napakagandang pelikula. Mahusay ang performance ng mga artista. Nakakaiyak.
